HCHS Parents and Stakeholders,
I hope this email finds you well! I wanted to share some information about several upcoming days.
Report Cards:
The first Report Cards of this semester for MiniQuarter 5 went home yesterday! Please make sure to review with your student to celebrate successes and make a plan for any needs. As a reminder...Patriot XL is a free, before- and after-school tutoring offered daily from 7-7:30 am and 3:15-5:00 pm.
Parent-Teacher Conferences:
Semester 2 Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held this coming Monday on Monday, MARCH 3rd from 1-7 pm. We hope you'll make plans to come meet your child's Semester 2 teachers! Students will not attend school on Monday. A few notes...
**Entrance will be in 2 locations: At the front circle under the canopy; At E entrance across from the red football fieldhouse
**The day is come and go, so please come when you can...but, please come!
**Our school counselors will have locations set up at each entrance. If you need your child's schedule or a school map, those will be available.
**We encourage you to bring your student with you! This allows them to share with you their school and also has them available to talk with you and their teachers together.
Again, we hope to see you Monday!
Junior Parents...ACT Boot Camp
In addition to the ACT Prep we have had throughout the year during our College and Career Readiness period for our juniors, we have contracted with a tutoring company that specializes in ACTPrep. They will provide an ACT Boot Camp during the school day to interested junior students on March 6th and 7th, the week prior to the Junior ACT Day exam. Dr. Ben Phillips of Jane Ross Tutoring will conduct the training. I've known Dr. Phillips for years (he's a former professor of mine from Union University), and we are very excited we're able to offer this service to our juniors again this year free of charge to our students. (To take this class outside of school privately is typically several hundred dollars per student.)
Dr. Phillips will have two groups he works with...one group each morning (8-11 am) and one each afternoon (12-3) with a max of 50 students per group (100 total). Students will be school-excused from classes to attend. We will be communicating this opportunity to students to have them sign up for the ACT Boot Camp. If you know you would like your child to participate, please reply to this email with your child's name, and I'll make sure they are added to the list.
Additional ACT Prep opportunities through UTM:
UTM has recently announced several ACT Prep opportunities. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
ACT/PreACT/Mock College+ Day
THURSDAY, March 13 is a BIG DAY on campus! Please help make sure your child is here. The following will happen...
MORNING:
Seniors: Mock College + College Panel + Life Skills Speakers + Senior Information
Seniors will participate in a Mock College simulation, which is always a favorite activity with our soon-to-be graduates. Regardless of a student's after-high-school plans, this simulation is great for students to put life skills into action! Additionally, seniors will attend sessions with a series of guest speakers and also hear from a college panel, made up of recent HCHS graduates. Topics and guest speakers will include Adult Living with Darlene Russell and Financial Awareness and Avoiding Scams by Kali Cooper of First Bank. We will also share important senior information.
Juniors: ACT
Juniors will be taking their first-ever state ACT, a real ACT. The ACT is a graduation requirement and students in Tennessee have two ACT tests provided to them for free--this one during junior year and then another next fall during senior year. Junior College and Career Readiness classes have been preparing for this day since we began school in August, and we are excited to see how our juniors perform on their first state test! Keep in mind that students should take additional national ACT national tests. Please see our attached ACT Cheat Sheet for more information (as a note, the deadline for the April national test is this Friday night at 11:59 pm). Tests will be scored by the ACT company. Students will receive a composite score and subscores for each area. When those arrive, they will be shared with the students, and they will also be able to access them in their ACT Portal account. We have a reward structure in place and are ready to see some great scores! (Also, make sure to see the ACT Boot Camp information above!)
Sophomores: PreACT
Sophomores will take the PreACT, an exam ordered through the same company that produces the real ACT. The purpose of this assessment will be for our sophomores to get an idea of the layout of the ACT, get a feel for the type of questions they can expect on the ACT, and get an idea of how they would score currently. This exam is about 40 minutes shorter than the real ACT, but has all 4 test areas: English, Math, Reading, Science. Tests will be scored by the ACT company. Students will receive a composite score and subscores for each area. When those arrive, they will be shared with the students. The real ACT's highest score is a 36; the PreACT is 35.
AFTERNOON FOR ALL:
Our Student Ambassadors have planned a fun afternoon for our students! Most students will participate or be spectators in our boys' volleyball tournament. Since we did Powder Buff in the fall with girls competing in flag football, the boys will be competing in Buff Puff, a boys volleyball tournament. Students wishing for a different option will have a few other choices.
NOTE FOR ALL:
This is a full day of school. Students should plan to be at school for the entire day. Students should only check out for reasons that will be considered excused, such as a doctor's appointment. College Visits and Job Shadowing are not available on this day. If your student asks to be checked out early for other reasons, please have them stay at school. Thank you for your help in this.
