English III

COURSE DESCRIPTION: English III is designed to refine writing skills and to increase the student’s knowledge and appreciation of both classical and contemporary American literature, to teach the application of appropriate literary terminology and techniques, to allow for in-depth discussions on themes related to society today, and to provide students with the opportunity to develop their writing skills through a variety of essays and short writing assignments.

OBJECTIVES: This year we will be covering 4 standards set forth by the Tennessee Department of Education. The standards are as follows: Reading Literature/Informational Text, Language, Speaking and Listening, and Writing. TESTING: All Juniors are required to take the ACT exam as a requirement for graduation. Therefore, this class will also align to ACT standards in addition to TN state standards to allow students to maximize their scores. Furthermore, this course will provide test prep in the following areas: ACT English subtest, ACT Reading subtest

SUPPLIES: You are expected to bring all materials to class daily. This includes:

Paper and writing utensils
Binder, Notebook, or Folder (something with pockets)
Optional supplies: highlighters

SEATING: All students will be given an assigned seat. Each student is expected to sit in his or her seat unless otherwise directed by the teacher.

CELL PHONES/PERSONAL TECHNOLOGY: Per state law and school board policy, cell phones are not to be used in class at any time. All cell phones/ear buds should be silent and out of sight. Phones will be confiscated by the teacher if they are out or in use. Additionally, students will not be allowed to use personal devices (laptops, smartwatches, tablets, etc) during class. Only school issued Chromebooks will be allowed.

BELL_WORK: When you come into the classroom, a bell-work assignment will be posted on the board. Students are expected to work on the bell-work IMMEDIATELY after the tardy bell rings.

TARDIES: Students who are not in the room when the tardy bell rings will be considered tardy. Office tardy referrals begin after the 2nd tardy. (Remember: Attendance events like tardies do affect exam exemptions).

LEA VING THE ROOM: Leaving the room during class time should be for emergencies only. If you leave the room, you MUST sign in/out, take the Hall Pass, AND leave your cell phone.

●To preserve instructional time, each student will be given 4 “passes” out of class per grading period. These passes are for emergencies only. Once a student’s 4th pass has been used, that student will not be allowed to leave the room until the next grading period. Unused passes will turn into extra credit points at the end of the grading period.

FOOD/DRINKS IN THE ROOM: Students may have small snacks/drinks during class as long as they are not causing distractions. However, there are no trips to the vending machine during class.

GROUP WORK: Occasionally, students will be placed in cooperative groups. When this occurs, students are expected to stay with their group members and work quietly. Any group member not participating will not receive credit.

GRADING: Your grade will be determined by a points system. This means that every assignment is worth a certain number of points, and at the end of the grading period your grade will be determined by the total number of points you earned divided by the total amount of points possible.

Plagiarism: Copying work from another source (examples include other students, the Internet, etc.) is not allowed. Students who copy work or share work will not receive full credit for that assignment.

Make-up work: Students who have missing assignments WILL make-up all work. Zeros are not accepted in this class. I expect you to work when assignments are given, and if you do not, then you will be asked to complete those assignments for home-work, at Patriot XL, etc. Work that is finished at any time will always receive a grade; however, work that is not completed on time will have points deducted, and the maximum grade for all late work will be an 80%. Per district policy, any student who is absent will have 5 days to make up all work

Grading Scale: 100-90 =A, 89-80=B, 79-70=C, 69-60=D, 59-0=F

1 Extra Credit opportunity will be given per grading period for those who wish to raise their grades. However, extra credit will not be a replacement for daily assignments.

GOOGLE Classroom: Lessons will be put on GOOGLE Classroom for students who are Homebound, Alt. School, etc.

All students are required to take an English III mid-term (benchmark) and final. These tests will count approximately 7% of the final grade (Note: students meeting certain criteria will be eligible for a final exam exemption)

Grades will be updated in StudentVue weekly so students/parents can keep track of their progress.

TURNING IN ASSIGNMENTS: Papers are to be turned into the appropriate slot by the door. Make-up work should be turned into the make-up slot.

ENDING THE DAY: Class will end with enough time for students to get ready to leave; therefore, don’t start packing up unless directed by the teacher. Additionally, students need to remain seated or standing by their desks until the bell rings unless they are turning in papers, sharpening pencils, returning materials, etc. DO NOT stand by the door waiting for the bell to ring.
