Criminal Justice I Syllabus

This course is an introduction designed to prepare students to pursue careers in the fields of law enforcement, legal services, corrections, and security. It gives students an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills relating to criminal justice fields and prepares them to advance into the second level of criminal justice study (criminal justice II). It will be an overview of the criminal justice system and how it functions. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to identify careers in these fields, summarize the laws that govern the application of justice, and draw key connections between the history of the criminal justice system and the modern legal system.

Some opportunities we will have to gain knowledge will include:

Ø Law enforcement professionals sharing their knowledge and experience with the students

Ø Learning to be detail oriented and to collect important information by maintaining a daily log

Ø Research on technology’s role in law enforcement

Ø Touring a criminal justice institution (if approved)

Prerequisites and sequencing:

There are no prerequisites for Criminal Justice I

Grade level 10, 11 and 12

Materials needed for this class include:

Paper

Pencil/pen

Folder

Digital storage device or method

Ear phones or buds for computer use

**STUDENTS WHO DO NOT HAVE THESE MATERIALS EACH DAY MAY BE PENILIZED**

Class Policies:

Participation – Attending class, participating in class discussions, daily work, and completing assignments are all part of the students’ responsibilities. Each class member is expected to actively participate in all aspects of the class.

Assignments and Grading – Daily class assignments, class projects, and work outside the classroom will be included in this course. In order to receive the optimum grade, students must complete and submit work by the due date. Extensions are only given with prior approval. Attitude and work ethic will be strongly considered in the grading process.

Field Trips- Prior notice will be given for all field trips. Only those students who are passing and up to date on all assignments will be allowed to participate.

Character – Each student is expected to show respect to the teacher and class members, produce his/her own original work, and demonstrate academic integrity and honesty at all times.
