Course Description

African American History – Students will examine the life and contributions of African Americans from the early 1600s through the contemporary United States. Students will explore the influence of geography on slavery and the growth of slavery in the U.S. Students will consider urban and rural African American communities and institutions in the North and South leading up to and during the Civil War. Students will investigate the rise of Jim Crow and the subsequent effects of the laws and trace the impact of African American migration through the early 20th century. Students will explore the impact of the Harlem Renaissance as well as the contributions of African Americans during the Great Depression and World War II. Students will examine the successes and failures of the Civil Rights Movement and consider the contemporary issues confronting African Americans.

Content Overview

Students will apply these skills to create and address questions that will guide inquiry and critical thinking. These practices should be regularly applied throughout the year. Students will progress through the inquiry cycle (SSP.01-SSP.04) by analyzing primary and secondary sources to construct and communicate their conceptual understanding of the content standards and to develop historical and geographic awareness (SSP.05- SSP.06).

Supplies

You will need to bring something to write with every day, pen or pencil. You will also be required to have a notebook that will be graded. This notebook will contain state standards, daily learning objectives, bell work, quizzes, and class notes.

Discipline

Students are expected to always behave in an appropriate manner. All discipline will be handled according to school board policy. Drinks and snacks are allowed unless privileges are lost due to classroom uncleanliness.

Grading Policy

Your grade will be determined by a points system. This means that every assignment is worth a certain number of points, and at the end of the grading period your grade will be determined by the total number of points you earned divided by the total amount of points possible.

Plagiarism: Copying work from another source (examples include other students, the Internet, etc.) is not allowed. Students who copy work or share work will not receive credit for that assignment.
Make-up work: Students who have missing assignments will make-up all the work. Zeros are not accepted in this class. I expect you to work when assignments are given, and if you do not, then you will be asked to complete those assignments for homework, at Patriot XL, or in homeroom. Work that is finished at any time will always receive a grade; however, work that is not completed on time will have points deducted, and the maximum grade for all late work will be 80%.
Per district policy, any student who is absent will have 5 days for every absence to make up all work
Grading Scale: 100-90 =A, 89-80=B, 79-70=C, 69-60=D, 59-0=F
Extra Credit opportunities will be given periodically for those who wish to raise their grades.
GOOGLE Classroom: Lessons will be put on Goggle Classroom for students who are absent, Homebound, Alt. School, etc.
Grades will be updated in Student Vue weekly so students/parents can keep track of their progress.

Attendance

Please refer to your Student Handbook for the policy on attendance. To achieve the required objectives for this course in a 9-week period, attendance is a must. If a student is absent, whether excused or not, it is the responsibility of the STUDENT to find out what he/she missed and make up the work/notes in the allotted amount of time according to school policy. This only applies to any work that was given on the day the student was absent and that was due the following day. There is a designated area in the classroom where objectives, bell work, and assignments are posted and available for the student to check as soon as they return to school. Most assignments are posted well in advance and are always due at the end of the class period on the day of the test for that material, unless otherwise noted. If a student is absent on the day of a test, all assignments will be due the day of the student’s return, not five days after the test date. Bellwork will be given every day and used as a daily grade in the student’s overall average.

Exams/Test/Quizzes

There is no end-of-course exam for this course. Everyone is required to take a mid-term and final exam for this course regardless of attendance or grades. At the end of the course, each student will be given a post-test. A test will be given every 4 ½ weeks. Again, attendance is of the greatest importance. If a student is absent on the day of a test, that student will only be allowed to take the test after school. Class time is valuable and will not be used to take a test that was missed. This policy is non-negotiable. The test, while still covering the same objectives and content, will not be the same as the one given in class. They will have the allocated time of 5 days to make up the test, per the school board policy.

Bell work

When you come into the classroom, a bell-work assignment will be posted on the board. Students are expected to work on the bell-work IMMEDIATELY after the tardy bell rings.

Tardy

A student is tardy for this class if he or she is not seated when the tone sounds. The consequences are outlined in the school handbook. As with starting class, the tone is a signal of time only. The class begins when you enter the room and ends when I dismiss it. Hall and Bathroom rule – I give each student 3 hall/bathroom passes. They are to use them at their discretion and sign out on the sign-out sheet. If you have any medical condition that I need to be aware of, please let me know.

Cheating

There is zero tolerance for cheating. Whether you did the assignment and allowed others to copy it or the one “borrowing answers”, it will result in all participants receiving a grade of “0”.

Turning in Assignments

Papers are to be turned into the appropriate slot by the door. Make-up work should be turned into the make-up slot. Students who are not in class will have opportunities to turn work in on GOOGLE Classroom if they choose.
